Histoire
Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'activité du port d'Oban était importante, à la fois pour des navires marchands et des navires de la Royal Navy. Pour assurer la protection du port, une boucle de détection de sous-marins installée à Ganavan permettait de détecter les navires et les sous-marins entre Oban, Mull et Lismore.
Transports
Oban est relié à Glasgow par le train. Elle doit son développement au chemin de fer et aux bateaux à vapeur. C'est aussi un port actif, point de départ de plusieurs lignes de ferries vers les Hébrides.
Culture
Les attraits d'Oban résident dans le Waterfront Centre, la Cathédrale St Columba, la Cathédrale Saint-Jean-le-Divin la distillerie d'Oban, le château de Dunollie, le château de Dunstaffnage et la McCaig's Tower, qui domine la ville.
Traditionnellement, le jour de l'ouverture du Argyllshire Highland Gathering, Oban est le théâtre d'un concours de cornemuse.
La distillerie
Fondée en 1794, la distillerie d'Oban, produit un whisky single malt. Elle fait partie du groupe Diageo tout comme: Johnnie Walker, J&B, Bell's, Blair Athol, Caol Ila, Cardhu, Knockando, Glen Elgin, Clynelish, Cragganmore, Dalwhinnie, Glenkinchie, Glen Ord, Lagavulin, Royal Lochnagar et Talisker.
