Son nom provient des mots du vieil anglais burh pour « ville fortifiée » ou « ville sur une colline » et ford pour « gué ».

Le Prieuré de Notre-Dame (Priory of Our Lady) à Burford était une communauté bénédictine anglicane pour religieux et religieuses.

Histoire

C'est à Burford qu'Oliver Cromwell capture en 1649 environ 300 levellers qui s'étaient mutinés lors d'une attaque de nuit, après les avoir poursuivis à travers deux comtés[1]. Il les fait enfermer dans l'église de la ville pendant trois jours, les condamne à mort puis les gracie après les avoir forcés à assister à l'exécution de leurs leaders, épisode évoqué par l'écrivain anglais Robert Goddard dans son roman Heather Mallender a disparu.

Burford ist ein Dorf und „civil parish“ (Gemeinde) am Fluss Windrush, in den Cotswold-Hügeln, im Bezirk West Oxfordshire in Oxfordshire, England. Es wird oft als das „Tor“ zu den Cotswolds bezeichnet. Burford liegt 18 Meilen (29 km) westlich von Oxford und 22 Meilen (35 km) südöstlich von Cheltenham, etwa 2 Meilen (3 km) von der Grenze zu Gloucestershire entfernt. Der Ortsname leitet sich von den altenglischen Wörtern „burh“ (befestigte Stadt oder Hügelstadt) und „ford“ (Furt) ab, was die Überquerung eines Flusses bedeutet.[1] Die Volkszählung von 2011 ergab für die Gemeinde Burford eine Einwohnerzahl von 1410 und für Burford Ward eine Einwohnerzahl von 1847.[2]

Burford (/ˈbɜːrfərd/) is a town on the River Windrush, in the Cotswold hills, in the West Oxfordshire district of Oxfordshire, England. It is often referred to as the 'gateway' to the Cotswolds. Burford is located 18 miles (29 km) west of Oxford and 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Cheltenham, about 2 miles (3 km) from the Gloucestershire boundary. The toponym derives from the Old English words burh meaning fortified town or hilltown and ford, the crossing of a river. The 2011 Census recorded the population of Burford parish as 1,422.[1]
