History

The project was started in 2013 and initially attracted the nickname Surfbury,[2] a mix of Poundbury, a previous new town created by the Duchy of Cornwall in the 1990s, and the prevalence for surfing in Newquay.[3] The new town was named Nansledan, after the area in which it is built. Nansledan means Broad Valley in Cornish, a theme which continues in the street names and the school (Skol Nansledan - literally School Nansledan.)[4]

The new town is intended to have a High Street, many shops and a school - Nansledan Primary School opened in September 2019[note 1] and can cater for 420 pupils, but only had 152 in the month of its opening.[6] The 540-acre (220 ha) estate had 300 homes sited on it in Summer 2020, by 2043, nearly 4,000 homes are planned to be on the site.[7]

Building materials for the site have come mainly from three quarries in the county of Cornwall;[8]

The first residents moved into Nansledan in 2015.[7]

Notes

  1. The school was officially opened by the Prince of Wales in March 2020, but was opened in September 2019 previous due to the start of a new school year.[5]
