Colton has a church called St Andrew,[3] and a pub called The Norfolk Lurcher on High House Farm Lane[4] which first opened in 1991 and was called the Ugly Bug Inn until 2007.[5]
The name "Colton" means 'Cola's farm/settlement' or 'Koli's farm/settlement'.[6] Colton was recorded in the Domesday Book as Coletuna.[7] On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Marlingford.[8] In 2001 the new parish was renamed to "Marlingford and Colton".[9]
