The villages name origin is uncertain but probably means 'Bucca's homestead/village' or 'bucks' homestead/village'.
The Rev. William Haslam was the evangelical vicar of Hassingham and Buckenham from 1863 to 1871.[1] Haslam was supported by his wife and the preacher Catherine Hooper who they had met in Bath. Hooper began her first large mission here before becoming a well known touring preacher.[2]
The former parish church, St Nicholas' Church, Buckenham, is now redundant and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. It dates from the 13th Century and has a rare octagonal tower.[3] The village now lies within the civil parish of Strumpshaw .
Buckenham railway station serves the outlying communities and the RSPB reserve. The station is served by Wherry Lines trains from Norwich to Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.[4]
