Bayburt fut une importante étape sur la route de la soie et sera visitée par Marco Polo aux XIIIe – XIVe siècles et par le voyageur turc Evliya Çelebi au XVIIe siècle.

Sie ist Hauptstadt der gleichnamigen Provinz Bayburt und zugleich auch des zentralen Landkreises (Merkez). Zum Landkreis gehören noch 121 Dörfer (Köy), von denen Konursu mit 1147 Einwohnern das größte ist.[en] Bayburt
