The district is mostly populated by Kurds from the Gerdî tribe while the Begzade tribe resides in one village.[3][4]
The district borders the Erbil Governorate of Kurdistan Region in Iraq to the south and the local Gerdî tribe share closer traditions and customs with the Gerdî Kurds residing on the Iraqi side than the Kurds of Yüksekova and Hakkâri.[5]
AKP candidate Çetinkaya won the mayorship in the 2019 local elections with 57.52% of the vote.[6]
