Riotuerto ist eine Gemeinde in der spanischen Autonomen Region Kantabrien. Die von den Regionalstraßen CA-161 und CA-261 gebildete Achse, die die Orte Solares und Arredondo verbindet, durchquert die Gemeinde von Nordwesten nach Südosten, parallel zum Bach Revilla, einem Nebenfluss des Flusses Miera.

Riotuerto (Rutuertu in Cantabrian) is one of the municipalities of Cantabria, lying between the North Coast of the Cantábrican Sea and the mountains of the Cantabrian Sierra. It is part of the ancient merindad (shire) of Trasmiera. The centre of Riotuerto is La Cavada, once the home of the famed Royal Artillery Factory and now the site of the Town Hall, library and cannon museum. Other barrios include Barrio de Arriba, Lombana, Monte and Angustina.

El término municipal, que abarca las localidades de La Cavada (sede del ayuntamiento), Angustina, Barrio de Arriba, Monte y Rucandio, es atravesado por los ríos Covadal, Revilla, Canónigo y Miera.
