Es sede de un municipio con 201,85 km² de área y 127 567 habitantes (2001), subdividido en 49 freguesias. El municipio limita al norte con el municipio de Braga, al este con Guimarães, al sur con Santo Tirso y Trofa, al oeste con Vila do Conde y Póvoa de Varzim y al noroeste con Barcelos. Fue creado en 1835 por desmembramiento del municipio de Barcelos.

Vila Nova de Famalicão (umgangssprachlich meist nur Famalicão) ist eine Stadt in Portugal und sie gehört zum Distrikt Braga, mit 133.753 Einwohnern (Kreis, Stand 30. Juni 2011). Der renommierte Regisseur Manoel de Oliveira drehte 1941 einen Dokumentarfilm über die Stadt, der er mehrfach seine Sympathien aussprach.

Vila Nova de Famalicão (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈvilɐ ˈnɔvɐ ðɨ fɐmɐliˈkɐ̃w] (listen)) is a Portuguese town with a population of approximately 133,048 inhabitants ([1]) in an area of 201,59 km2, subdivided into 49 parishes (Administrative Division of 11 Unions of Parishes and 23 Parish Councils,[2]). Inserted in the Braga District, in the North Region of Portugal and in the Sub-Region of Vale do Ave, global positioned at 41⁰24’36” N | 8⁰31’13.53” W. The population of Vila Nova was created in 1205 with the charter given by the King Sancho I. The municipality was created in 1835 as a detachment from Barcelos and was elevated to the category of “Vila” with the charter given by the Queen D. Maria II. In 1985, approved by National Assembly, Vila Nova de Famalicão was elevated to the category of "city". The inhabitants of Famalicão are called Famalicenses.

Находится в составе крупной городской агломерации Большое Минью. По старому административному делению входил в провинцию Минью. Входит в экономико-статистический субрегион Аве, который входит в Северный регион. Численность населения — 30,2 тыс. жителей (город), 127,6 тыс. жителей (муниципалитет). Занимает площадь 201,85 км².
