Blokzijl fut une commune indépendante jusqu'au 1^er janvier 1973, date à laquelle elle fusionna avec Vollenhove, Giethoorn et Wanneperveen pour former la nouvelle commune de Brederwiede. De nos jours, Blokzijl fait partie de Steenwijkerland.
