Géographie

Le village est situé à 5 km au nord-ouest de Groningue.

Histoire

L'abbaye cistercienne d'Aduard est fondée en 1192. Elle est au XV^e siècle, un foyer de l'humanisme où se rencontraient des érudits comme Wessel Gansfort et Rudolph Agricola. Elle est supprimée par les protestants en 1575. Il n'en reste qu'un bâtiment appelé Abdijkerk (« église abbatiale »), qui serait en fait l'ancienne infirmerie du monastère.

Aduard est une commune indépendante avant le 1^er janvier 1990, date à laquelle elle est rattachée à celle de Zuidhorn. Le 1^er janvier 2019, celle-ci est à son tour rattachée à la nouvelle commune de Westerkwartier.

Aduard (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈaːdyɑrt]) is a village in the municipality of Westerkwartier, in the Netherlands. It is located about 8 km northwest of Groningen. The history of Aduard dates back to the foundation in 1192 of the Cistercian Aduard Abbey, where famous early Humanists like Rodolphus Agricola and Wessel Gansfort studied and lectured. The centre of the village is dominated by the so-called Abdijkerk (abbey church), one of the last visible remains of the erstwhile prestigious monastery. It is suggested that this building, currently in use by the Protestant congregation, was originally the monastery's infirmary.
