Puerto Peñasco, für englischsprechende Touristen auch Rocky Point, ist ein Touristenort, wobei die meisten Touristen aus Arizona anreisen. Puerto Peñasco hat einen kleinen Flughafen. Der Bau einer Landstraße, die Puerto Peñasco mit San Luis Río Colorado und Yuma verbindet, ist seit Ende 2008 abgeschlossen.

Puerto Peñasco (O'odham: Geʼe Ṣuidagĭ[2]) is a small city located in Puerto Peñasco Municipality in the northwest of the Mexican state of Sonora, 100 kilometres (62 mi) from the border with the U.S. state of Arizona. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 62,689 inhabitants.[3] It is located on the northern shores of the Sea of Cortez on the small strip of land that joins the Baja California Peninsula with the rest of Mexico.[4] The area is part of the Altar Desert, one of the driest and hottest areas of the larger Sonoran Desert.[5]

Puerto Peñasco (Geʼe Ṣuidagĭ en o'odham) es una ciudad mexicana ubicada en el noroeste del estado de Sonora, en la zona del gran desierto de Altar.[5] La ciudad es cabecera del municipio de Puerto Peñasco y de acuerdo a los datos el último Censo de Población y Vivienda realizado en 2020 por el Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI), esta cuenta con una población de 62,689, que a diferencia del 2010, eran 56,756 habitantes, lo que la convierte en la novena ciudad más poblada del estado. Debido a su ubicación en la costa del Golfo de California, y la posesión de playas extensas, es uno de los destinos turísticos más importantes del norte de México, y es considerado el destino con mayor crecimiento en los últimos años del país.[6] Se ubica a 97 kilómetros de Sonoyta en la frontera con Estados Unidos y a 457.2 kilómetros de Hermosillo la capital estatal. La ciudad se encuentra en la pequeña franja de tierra que une a la península de Baja California con el resto de México.
