La municipalità è costituita dall'omonimo atollo, costituito da 42 isolette, nella Catena delle Ratak, nell'Oceano Pacifico, a sud di Maloelap la terra emersa più vicina.

L'atollo è costituito da un'ampia laguna (239,7 km²).

Sull'isola si trova un piccolo aeroporto, con codice IATA: AUL.

Storia

Aur fu scoperta il 27 giugno 1788 dai capitani britannici Thomas Gilbert e William Marshall. Il 23 febbraio 1817 vi sbarcò anche il navigatore russo Otto von Kotzebue[2], che la esplorò in parte. La scoperta delle Ratak si deve però allo spagnolo Alonso de Salazar nel 1526. Aur seguì la sorte dell'arcipelago nel cadere prima in mano spagnola, poi tedesca (1885), giapponese (1914) e statunitense (1944).

Aur (auch Aurh, Traversey- oder Ibbetsoninseln genannt) ist ein Atoll in der Ratak-Kette der Marshallinseln. Das Atoll hat eine Landfläche von 5,62 km² bei einer Lagunenfläche von 92,58 km². Die 80 m tiefe Lagune hat zwei schiffbare Passagen zum Meer. Es liegt südlich des Maloelap-Atolls.

Aur Atoll (Marshallese: Aur, [ɑurˠ][1]) is a coral atoll of 42 islands in the Pacific Ocean, and forms a legislative district of the Ratak Chain of the Marshall Islands. Its total land area is only 15 square kilometers (5.6 sq mi), but it encloses a lagoon with an area of 620 square kilometers (240 sq mi). It is located south of Maloelap Atoll. The population of Aur Atoll was 499 in 2011.
