L'abitato è situato poco più a nord del confine col Clare sulla strada nazionale N18 Galway–Limerick. Gort fa parte del territorio di Ui Fiachrach Aidhne conosciuto anche come Maigh Aidhne ("la piana di Aidhne"), che corrisponde anche grossolanamaente alla diocesi di Kilmacduagh / Cill Mhic Dhuach. Gort è noto per la presenza di moltissimi brasiliani, nonostante negli ultimi anni ci sia un controesodo la percentuale di brasiliani si aggira intorno al 25%, inoltre la domenica viene celebrata una messa in brasiliano. Sono presenti molti luoghi di interesse a Gort, uno di questi è il noto Coole Park, parco naturale pittoresco dove sono presenti molte specie di animali. Gort è rimasta comunque una tipica cittadina irlandese.

Gort (irisch Gort Inse Guaire oder An Gort) ist eine Ortschaft im Süden des County Galway in der Republik Irland, zwischen Loughrea und Ennis gelegen. Obwohl An Gort heute der offizielle irische Name des Ortes ist, hat sich im (irischen) Sprachgebrauch die traditionelle Bezeichnung Gort Inse Guaire durchgesetzt. Beim Census 2016 lebten in Gort 2994 Menschen.[1] Der Ort liegt direkt an der Nationalstraße N18 zum County Clare, die von Galway nach Limerick führt. In östlicher Richtung verbindet ihn die Regionalstraße N353/N352 mit Portumna am Lough Derg. Gort gehörte einst zum Königreich Uí Fiachrach Aidhne, auch als Maigh Aidhne (Die Ebene von Aidhne) bekannt, einem Gebiet, das dem der heutigen Diözese von Kilmacduagh entspricht.[en] Gort
