Die Stadt ist Hauptort des Distrikts Jogulamba Gadwal, welcher 2016 gegründet wurde. Gadwal hat den Status einer Municipality. Die Stadt ist in 10 Wards gegliedert. Sie hatte am Stichtag der Volkszählung 2011 57.569 Einwohner.

Gadwal diente historisch als Hauptstadt von Gadwal Samsthanam, einem Vasallenstaat des Nizam von Hyderabad. Aus dieser Zeit existiert noch eine Befestigungsanlage.

Gadwal is a Town and the district headquarters of Jogulamba Gadwal district in the Indian state of Telangana.[4] It is located 188 km (117 mi) from the state capital Hyderabad And 59 km From Kurnool and is a state assembly constituency. Gadwal historically served as the capital of Gadwal Samsthanam, a vassal of the Nizam of Hyderabad. Gadwal was previously a part of the Hyderabad State.
