A partire dal 2007 quando è stata approvata la riforma dei comuni, il comune comprende oltre alla città di Esbjerg, anche i territori di Bramming e Ribe.
Il comune ha una superficie di 741 km² e una popolazione totale di 114.244. Confina con il comune di Tønder a sud, con il comune di Haderslev a sud-est, con il comune di Vejen a est e con il Comune di Varde a nord. Esbjerg è collegata via traghetto con il comune di Fanø sull'omonima isola a ovest.

Esbjerg Kommune ist eine dänische Kommune in Jütland. Sie entstand am 1. Januar 2007 im Zuge der Kommunalreform durch Vereinigung der „alten“ Esbjerg Kommune mit den bisherigen Kommunen Bramming und Ribe sowie der Ortschaft Grimstrup im Kirchspiel Grimstrup der ehemaligen Kommune Helle, alle im Ribe Amt.[en] Esbjerg Municipality
Esbjerg Municipality (Danish pronunciation: [ˈesˌpjɛɐ̯ˀ]) is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Region of Southern Denmark on the west coast of the Jutland peninsula in southwest Denmark. Its mayor is Jesper Frost Rasmussen, from the Venstre (Center-Right Party) political party. By 1 January 2007, the old Esbjerg municipality was, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipal Reform" of 2007), merged with the former Bramming and Ribe and a small part of Helle municipalities to form the new Esbjerg municipality.
