The municipality covers an area of 25.14 square kilometres (9.71 sq mi), and has a population of around 180.
Varvažov lies approximately 16 kilometres (10 mi) north of Písek, 57 km (35 mi) north-west of České Budějovice, and 75 km (47 mi) south of Prague.
The award-winning film Sekal Has to Die was shot in the village.
