La fondazione della città risale al 1560, quando le venne dato il nome di Nossa Senhora da Conceição.
Sul suo territorio è situato l'Aeroporto di San Paolo - Guarulhos, inaugurato nel 1985 e oggi (2015) maggiore aeroporto del Sudamerica per numero di passeggeri.

It is the second most populous city in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, the 13th most populous city in Brazil, and is also the most populous city in the country that is not a state capital.
