Géographie

Située à la frontière du Rondônia et de l'État de l'Amazonas, la ville est un centre important de commerce de cassitérite (dont l'exploitation minière est la plus importante activité économique de la région), ainsi qu'un centre de communication et de transport situé sur la rive est du rio Madeira, l'un des principaux affluents de l'Amazone. Elle abrite aussi la Forêt nationale de Jacundá.

Histoire

Officiellement fondée le 2 octobre 1914, Porto Velho connut ses premiers pionniers vers 1907, pendant la construction du Chemin de fer Madeira-Mamoré. Après la réalisation de la ligne de chemin de fer, la population locale approchait le millier d'habitants. Ses constructions étaient surtout celles du chemin de fer et des maisons de bois pour les ouvriers issus des Caraïbes - d'où le nom du quartier le plus important « Barbadoes Town », aujourd'hui « Alto do Bode ».

Porto Velho, amtlich portugiesisch Município de Porto Velho, ist die Hauptstadt des brasilianischen Bundesstaates Rondônia. Die Stadt hatte laut Schätzung zum 1. Juli 2020 539.354 Einwohner.[5] Die Fläche des gesamten Gemeindegebietes mit rund 34.091 km² entspricht in etwa der Größe Baden-Württembergs, jedoch mit einer Bevölkerungsdichte von 15,24 Einwohner pro km². Rund 91 % der Bevölkerung konzentrierten sich 2010 auf das eigentliche urbane Gebiet, rund 9 % auf das noch weitgehend unberührte Umland.[4] Auf dem Gemeindegebiet befinden sich Schutzgebiete und drei Stammesreservate der Karitiana, Kaxaraxi und Karipuna.

The population is 548,952 people (as of the IBGE 2021 estimation). Located on the border of Rondônia and the state of Amazonas, the town is an important trading center for cassiterite, the mining of which represents the most important economic activity in the region, as well as a transportation and communication center. It is on the eastern shore of the Madeira River, one of the main tributaries of the Amazon River. It is also Rondônia's largest city, and the largest state capital of Brazil by area.
