Économie

Barcarena est notable pour son unité de transformation de bauxite en alumine, par Alunorte, bauxite qui est extraite dans plusieurs sites dans le Pará.

La multinationale minière Norsk Hydro y détient « la plus grande raffinerie d’aluminium du monde ». Celle-ci rejette clandestinement des déchets toxiques[1].

Im Jahr 2010 hatte die Stadt 99.859 Einwohner, die Barcarenenser (barcarenenses) genannt werden.[1] Die Bevölkerungszahl wurde zum 1. Juli 2019 auf 124.680 Einwohner geschätzt, die auf einer Gemeindefläche von rund 1310 km² leben. Die Entfernung zur Hauptstadt Belém beträgt 15 km.

Barcarena is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Pará adjacent the Tocantins River. It has a population of 127,027 and is part of the Belém metropolitan area.[4] The city's economy relies largely on agriculture and bauxite. There are also facilities for pig iron nearby.[5] They city and port is developing as a major transshipping port that takes goods for international export linked by rail from nearby inland ports, from all over Brazil, speeding up shipment and reducing time and costs as opposed to traditional megaports in the Southeast.
