Storia

La città è stata fondata nel 1901 dalla Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP) come stazione di termine della ferrovia che portava il minerale ferroso dalle Middleback Ranges per essere utilizzato negli stabilimenti di Port Pirie. Il materiale veniva poi trasportato a destinazione con battelli appositi. L'insediamento era composto da alcuni cottages e tende situate alla base di una collina e dal nome di essa la località prese il nome di Hummock's Hill. La cittadina, cresciuta negli anni, prese il nome di Whyalla il 1º novembre 1919.

Whyalla /waɪˈælə/ was founded as "Hummocks Hill", and was known by that name until 1916.[5][6] It is the fourth most populous city in the Australian state of South Australia after Adelaide, Mount Gambier and Gawler and along with Port Pirie and Port Augusta is one of the three towns to make up the Iron Triangle. As of June 2018, Whyalla had an urban population of 21,742,[1] having declined at an average annual rate of -0.75% year-over-year over the preceding five years.[1] It is a seaport located on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula and is known as the "Steel City" due to its integrated steelworks and shipbuilding heritage. The port of Whyalla has been exporting iron ore since 1903.
