Gialalabad (in Urdu: جلال آباد, Jalāl Ābād) è un villaggio del Gilgit-Baltistan, a circa 30 km di distanza dalla città di Gilgit, vicino al villaggio di Oshikhandas, lungo il Fiume Bagrot.[1]

Strage del 1988

Nel maggio 1988 il governo militare di Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq lanciò un pogrom contro gli sciiti della regione,[2] approfittando di una banale controversia tra sunniti e sciiti (che prima convissero in pace nella regione) circa la comparsa della luna, che segnala l'inizio del digiuno canonico durante il mese lunare di Ramadan.[3] Il villaggio fu invaso da un Lashkar (esercito) di militanti radicali religiosi (Tālebān) del Chilas, del Kohistan, di Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, delle Aree Tribali di Amministrazione Federale e dei Ṭālebān provenienti dall'Afghanistan, e fu totalmente dato alle fiamme. Metà della popolazione fu trucidata.[4][5]

Altri villaggi come Sai, Bunji (che è anche sede principale delle forze armate pakistane), Jaglote e Pari Bangla - dove gli sciiti erano in minoranza - furono aggrediti e gli abitanti uccisi. Alcuni di essi riuscirono a fuggire in altri villaggi sciiti. Questa strage sistematica, che godeva del sostegno statale pakistano, secondo alcune fonti causò la morte di 150[6]-400 persone e il ferimento di alcune centinaia.

Jalalabad (Urdu: جلال آباد) is a small village of Gilgit District in Pakistan, located around 20 km east of Gilgit city. The village has a population of 5,000 households and approximately 40,000 residents. All of the inhabitants are Shia Muslims. The Bagrote River is the source of irrigation and the village's own powerhouse provides electricity. During the 1940s, people from Bilchar Valley, with the help of the British Indian Government, created water canals and established an irrigation system. It is predominantly agricultural land. There are two separate government high schools for boys and girls, Al-Mustafa Public School for both boys and girls. There are a large number of primary and middle schools. The literacy rate is approximately 96%. The village was the major victim of sectarian violence in 1988, when extra-regional forces consisting of thousands of armed militiamen under the command of General Zia Ul Haq and the Government ruined this village, burned houses, killing many innocent people. After this incident, the village was reconstructed. Now it is the center of Shias in Gilgit. The head of Shias of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khateeb of Gilgit Imamia Masjid Agha Rahat Hussain Al-Hussaini also come from this village.
